Parent Coaching: What’s that?

As parents, we are given this enormous responsibility and privilege of caring for other human beings who are constantly changing and growing. How do we develop the skills and strategies to respond to the baby, the toddler, the teen, and the young adult in front of us in this ever-changing landscape? Parent coaching is a vital support!

When my children were younger and I was juggling full-time work and parenting, I often felt overwhelmed and lonely. My kids and work were consistently at the top of the priority list. Exercising was somewhere at the bottom. Developing my skills as a parent was not even on the list! I read numerous parenting books and, as an educator myself, was well-versed in child development; yet, when it came to my own children, the skills and strategies felt less accessible. My husband, also in education, and I often engaged the expertise of tutors, therapists, and any resource the school recommended. These were all helpful! Yet, as parents, we were not developing or improving in our skill set in the same way. I was not always finding the joy in parenting.

Benefits of Engaging with a Parent Coach

As I moved from working in schools to coaching leaders, I realized the important role of the coach behind the scenes. In my role, I help people identify their values and goals, develop their skills, and support them in monitoring their growth. As a parent coach, I realize this is just as invaluable work that we often skip over as parents. After all, we are the leaders in the family. How do we make decisions? What skills do we want to develop in ourselves as parents? What skills do we want our children to develop? This is the intentional and deep thinking that leads to growth and change in our current parenting. Parenting doesn’t have to feel overwhelming all the time. You can create the family dynamic you’ve always envisioned with the right support and strategies.

As a parent coach, I draw on over 25 years of experience in independent schools as an educator and leader, I offer a supportive, skill-based approach tailored to your family’s specific needs. I am also a parent myself and might be just a little bit further down the time line which can be a helpful perspective. As a school leader and an educator, I partnered with parents constantly. Parents know their kids best. We, as educators and skilled coaches, know many kids over time and have a deep understanding of child development. Now, that’s a powerful partnership!

Together, we:

  • Clarify your parenting values and vision
  • Develop responsive strategies that honor your child’s uniqueness
  • Implement practical techniques that strengthen your parent-child connection
  • Build your confidence through intentional practice and reflection
